Bitcoin uses three distinct address formats, each with a different structure and purpose. The oldest is the legacy format, starting with "1". Then came Pay-to-Script-Hash (P2SH) addresses, which begin with "3". The newest is the Bech32 format, also called "native SegWit", which starts with "bc1". Each format encodes information differently. A swap system that expects one format may reject another outright.
The core problem is that the swap service's software validates addresses against a specific format. Many swap platforms were built to accept only legacy or P2SH addresses. If you provide a Bech32 address, the system may flag it as invalid. It will not generate a deposit address, and the swap will not proceed. Even if the system does accept the address, the underlying blockchain protocol treats each format as a different way to lock and unlock funds. The swap's smart contract or script might not be able to construct the correct unlocking transaction for a non-standard address.
Another failure mode occurs when the swap is already in progress. Suppose you send Bitcoin to a swap deposit address, but you later try to withdraw to a different format than the one the swap was configured for. The system may attempt to build a transaction that is not valid on the Bitcoin network. This can cause the swap to hang indefinitely, or the funds may be returned to the sender minus network fees.
The risk is not unique to Bitcoin. Other blockchains also have address format variations. But Bitcoin's multiple coexisting standards make it especially confusing. Unlike Ethereum, where addresses are always 0x-prefixed hex strings, Bitcoin's formats are not interchangeable. A swap platform that handles Bitcoin must explicitly support each format, or it will fail.
If you are swapping Bitcoin for another asset, the swap platform will typically ask for your receiving address. You must ensure that address matches the format the platform expects. Many modern platforms support all three formats, but some older or simpler ones do not. The safest approach is to check the platform's documentation or use a format that is known to work. If you are unsure, use a legacy address starting with "1", as it is the most universally supported.
