What happens when you send Bitcoin to a swap deposit address that expires

The swap fails. Your Bitcoin is either returned to you minus network fees, or it becomes permanently inaccessible depending on how the platform built its expiry logic.

You send from your own wallet straight to the exchanger — nothing to connect, no account, and you stay on this page throughout. Rates are indicative until a swap is opened.

The swap is carried out by an independent exchanger and the deposit address above is theirs. dogesound.club never holds, receives or controls your funds, has no key to that address, and earns a referral commission. Opening a swap sends your receiving address, IP, browser and timezone to the exchanger for their compliance checks; we store none of it. Check their terms, fees and country restrictions before sending anything.

Here is what actually happens under the surface.

How swap deposit addresses work

When you initiate a swap from Bitcoin to another asset, the platform generates a unique deposit address. This address is tied to a specific order with a time limit - typically 15 minutes to a few hours. The timer exists because Bitcoin transaction fees and confirmation times make indefinite address holding impractical for the platform.

The deposit address is a regular Bitcoin address. It can receive funds at any time. The expiry is a database rule, not a blockchain rule.

Two failure modes

Case 1: Funds are returned (most common)

The platform monitors its deposit addresses. When an address expires and later receives Bitcoin, the platform's wallet software detects the incoming transaction. Because no active order matches that address, the software sends the Bitcoin back to the sending address.

This return transaction is a new Bitcoin transaction. It requires a network fee. That fee comes out of your deposit. If you sent 0.01 BTC and the network fee to return it costs 0.0002 BTC, you receive back 0.0098 BTC.

The return is not instant. It depends on the platform's cleanup scripts and Bitcoin block times. Some return within minutes. Others batch returns and may take hours.

Case 2: Funds are lost (rare but real)

Some platforms do not monitor expired addresses. Their wallet software only processes addresses linked to active orders. Bitcoin arriving at an expired address sits there forever. The platform cannot spend it because they do not know which order it belongs to, and their systems do not sweep orphan deposits.

This is a design failure. Reputable platforms have automatic sweepers. But not all platforms are reputable.

Why this matters for Bitcoin specifically

Bitcoin transactions are irreversible. There is no "cancel" or "revert" button. When you send to an expired address, you are sending real Bitcoin to a destination that will not process your swap.

This is different from Ethereum or BNB Chain swaps. Those chains support smart contracts that can check if an address is still active and reject the transaction at the protocol level. Bitcoin has no such mechanism. The deposit address is just a public key hash. It accepts anything.

What you should do if it happens

Open a support ticket immediately. Include the transaction ID (TXID) of your deposit and the swap order ID if you have one. The platform can manually credit your swap or initiate a return if they have the keys to that address.

Do not send a second deposit to the same expired address. That doubles the problem.

The practical difference from other swaps

When you swap BNB for another token on BNB Chain, the swap either succeeds or fails in seconds. The smart contract enforces the time limit. You cannot send BNB to an expired swap contract because the contract stops accepting.

Bitcoin swaps are more fragile. The platform relies on you to check the timer. If you miss it, you depend entirely on the platform's goodwill and software quality to recover your funds.

Where this fits

This page is part of a set about moving Bitcoin into and out of other chains. For a broader understanding of how Bitcoin behaves differently from faster chains during swaps, read "Why does a Bitcoin swap stay pending while a BNB Chain swap finishes in seconds." That page explains the fundamental block time and finality differences that make Bitcoin swaps slower and less forgiving.
